Working in Harmony: A Musician's Lens on Team Culture
Presented by: Katie Barrick
This course explores the parallels between life as a professional musician and life on an office team. Drawing from years of performing, collaborating, and adapting in various musical settings, Katie share how the same skills that help musicians create great music together - listening closely, responding in real time, trusting one another's roles, and staying flexible when things don't go exactly as planned - are also essential for building and sustaining a healthy, thriving team at work. Rather than approaching the topic from an academic or management lens, Katie will be presenting on this topic from personal experience as a working musician and a fellow team member. I've experienced firsthand, both on a stage and behind a desk, how the habits that make an ensemble sound great can also help an office team communicate effectively, support one another in their individual (yet equally important!) roles, and consistently move toward shared success. Whether you have a musical background or not, the collaborative spirit of making music offers some practical and relatable insights into what habits and behaviors can help a team truly work in harmony.
One Workplace, Many Generations: Communication That Connects
Presented by: Tanya Brewer
Today’s workplace is more generationally diverse than ever, with up to six generations working side by side. Each generation brings valuable perspectives, experiences, and strengths—but also distinct communication styles shaped by technology, culture, and life stage. When those differences aren’t understood, even well-intended messages can lead to miscommunication, frustration, or disengagement. This interactive workshop explores how generational diversity shows up in everyday workplace communication—and how we can use that diversity to strengthen collaboration rather than divide teams. Participants will examine common generational communication preferences, challenge assumptions and stereotypes, and learn practical strategies for adapting their communication style to better connect with colleagues of all ages. Through discussion, reflection, and small-group activities, participants will leave with actionable tools they can immediately apply to foster trust, reduce friction, and create a more inclusive and collaborative work environment.
